RESUMO

To build a middle range theory of maternal perception of her child´s body weight. Thismiddle range theory was built deductively from the concept of social perception and from researchliterature published following the steps of theory synthesis. This theory has inputs, and the maternal perception of her child´s body weight is the outcome, that influence on maternal attitudes, andbehaviors related to the child’s body weight. This theory offers an explanation how mothers builda judgement about their child’s body weight. The professionals could work with the factors thatinfluence the maternal perception of her child´s body weight.(AU)

RESUMO

This quasi-experimental study examined the effects of an empowerment-based nutrition promotion program on food consumption and serum lipid levels among hyperlipidemic Thai elderly. Fifty-six experimental subjects received the program; 48 control subjects maintained their habitual lifestyle. The statistical methods used were the t-test, Z-test, and chi2/Fisher's exact test. After the program, the consumption of high saturated fat, cholesterol, and simple sugar diets was significantly lower for the experimental group than for the control group. The percentage change of the serum total cholesterol of the experimental subjects was significantly higher than that of the control subjects. The number of experimental subjects that changed from hyperlipidemia to normolipidemia significantly increased compared to that for the control subjects. The implementation of this program was related to an improvement in food consumption and serum lipid levels among hyperlipidemic Thai elderly and, therefore, has implications for practice.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Women worldwide experience pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting yet tolerate this significant prenatal stressor. The physical and emotional stress caused by pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting may influence maternal psychosocial adaptation yet few studies have examined these relationships. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the study was to examine the relationships between nausea and vomiting, perceived stress, social support and their ability to predict maternal psychosocial adaptation among Taiwanese women during early pregnancy. DESIGN: A correlational, cross-sectional research design. SETTING: Four prenatal clinics in Taiwan. PARTICIPANTS: Women (n=243) who had completed the 6-16 week of gestation consented to participate. METHODS: Subjects completed four self-report questionnaires in additional to providing demographic data: Index of Nausea, Vomiting, and Retching (INVR), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Interpersonal Support Evaluation List (ISEL), and the Prenatal Self-Evaluation Questionnaire (PSEQ). RESULTS: Pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting was experienced in varying degrees by 188 (77.4%) women. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that 37.6% of the variance in maternal psychosocial adaptation was explained by the severity of nausea and vomiting, perceived stress, social support, and pregnancy planning. CONCLUSIONS: Women at higher risk for poor maternal psychosocial adaptation have not planned their pregnancy and experience severe pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting. Severe pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting associated with high-perceived stress levels may be mediated by social support.

RESUMO

There is growing evidence that maternal prenatal stress may be hazardous to infant health. Changes in maternal hormonal and immune function as a result of stress may adversely affect the immune function and neurodevelopment of the fetus. Prenatal stress in the mother may produce lasting effects on the (1) infant's health status, (2) development and function of the infant's immune system, and (3) neurocognitive development of the infant. This article provides a synthesis of current human and animal literature on the effects of maternal prenatal stress on the developing fetus and the infant, with the resulting model evolving out of the framework of psychoneuroimmunology. The intent of the authors is an integrative review. The authors examined the following research question: What effect does maternal prenatal stress have on infants' immune development and neurodevelopment? All relevant studies were reviewed with no exclusion criteria. Major databases (CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsychINFO) were searched using a combination of the following key words: prenatal stress, cytokines, thymus, and infant neurodevelopment.

RESUMO

This study was an initial psychometric test of the Chinese versions of the Index of Nausea, Vomiting and Retching (INVR), and the Prenatal Self-Evaluation Questionnaire (PSEQ) in pregnant Taiwanese women. Although there already is evidence that the English-language versions of the scales are reliable and valid, it is important to verify the proper psychometric characteristics of the Chinese versions. Forward and backward translation, and a multiphase instrumentation study describing internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and content validity of the translated versions were conducted. A convenience sample was recruited from prenatal clinics in the south of Taiwan. Three measurement instruments were used in this study: the demographic inventory (DI), the INVR, and the PSEQ. Thirty pregnant women participated in the study. Both the internal consistency and stability coefficients of the INVR and PSEQ were satisfactory. The indices of content validity (CVI) for the Chinese versions of these two instruments were both 1.0, indicating that they are acceptable for use among Taiwanese pregnant women. This was the first instrumentation study of the INVR and PSEQ applied to Taiwanese pregnant women. Researchers could use this study as a model for future translation and application of psychometric instrumentation.

RESUMO

This article describes the development and pilot testing of the School Entrant Health Questionnaire (SEHQ) for the School Nursing Program in Victoria, Australia to provide a health profile of primary school children. Items likely to discriminate between healthy children and children having health concerns were generated. Domains included were: general health, medications, immunizations, dental health, speech/language, hearing, vision, disabilities, general development, behavior and emotional wellbeing, and family stress. Testing to determine reliability, validity and discriminability was conducted in four phases. The SEHQ was found to have sound reliability and good discriminability between students who had problems and those who did not. Analysis of the SEHQ data leads directly to clinical nursing actions for children identfied as having problems in any of the 11 domains. SEHQ is used to reach almost an Australian state population of 5-7year olds annually, generating a significant data base on this age group.
